Hello, thanks for stopping by. My name is Tom Patterson and I am graphic designer and creative director and I am currently attending Maryville University in the Digital Media program. I am currently working on my first capstone project in the ADDM 400 Capstone I class. I am thoroughly enjoying this course and I am looking forward to completing this project.
The course has taught me a valuable lesson about the intricate process of crafting successful projects. Through diligent research, time investment, and careful planning, one can truly unlock the potential for impactful designs. A key revelation for me came from delving into the pages of “Made To Stick” by Chip Heath and Dan Heath. This enlightening read introduces the “SUCCESs” framework, advocating for simplicity, unexpectedness, concreteness, credibility, emotion, and storytelling in communication. By grasping these principles, I’ve gained insights into the underlying science of memorable and persuasive messaging. Connecting the dots between creative endeavors and the strategic application of these principles has been both enlightening and empowering.
I am currently exploring two separate capstone projects for the course. My Plan A project is the complete rebranding of a small “mom and pop” New York style bodega grocery and deli. The project will cover all aspects of a brand identity exercise that will deliver a logo mark, brand voice, brand tone, brand mission, brand story, color, typography, signage, web, posts, ads, and digital assets. I really enjoy these types of projects where there is complete control over the brand of a company or organization.
My Plan 1 project is the complete design of a bike festival parade. I would develop all aspects of the visual expression including the logo mark, signage, swag, and digital/print promotional assets as well as a website. This project would very robust and would include some directional/wayfinding signage that would ensure a good UX for attendees. I would enjoy this project immensely.
I am very excited about either of these projects. Both have vast aspects that need to be research and explored. I love the idea of working for a small, local shop that is competing against larger chain stores. I have also always wanted to design all the branding for a music festival or a parade. Both of these projects have me very excited to explore more.
My goals for the next few weeks are to choose the project I want to move forward with and design the branding assets. I want to really dive deep into the chosen project and work through every aspect.
